Dobbin
This retired draft horse at “The Ranch” in Pritchard, B.C. was once used to pull sleighs across winter snow for those wanting this experience. When exploring the large, old barn, I espied him standing in his stall peacefully munching on hay. Turning his head to look at me was his only acknowledgement I was there. A number of years after doing his portrait, I was told he had lived to his early thirties before passing. His actual name was “Decker” which I did not know at the time of painting him. The name “Dobbin” is from an English children's book titled “At the Back of the North Wind”.
